Things in My Backyard

Neighbor's Flower

I really like my new backyard. It's currently really ugly and a totally mess but it's a haven for macro photography. Today while watering my new roses (bought bare-rooted), I noticed this little guy sticking through a little opening in the wooden gate that separates our backyard from the neighbor's. Being somewhat of an amateur botanist myself, I suspect it is in fact a purple flower thingy with petals and stuff.

It was taken with the Olympus E-p1 with a 14-42mm lens and I'm glad to see that the camera is more than up to the task for macro photography. The file was processed with NIK Color Efex's the Film Effect filter (Fuji 400H).

Yeah, that's about the extent of my botantical knowledge, too.

I have noticed that some flowers show a significant color shift when photographed - at least with my aging C-700UZ. I think it's because many flowers reflect a great deal of UV - because bees "see" UV, but are blind to red. Anyway, I frequently find flowers that my eyes see as blue or pale blue would appear violet or even magenta when captured digitally. Ever get such?

  2. Hmm, there are too many factors contributing to colour shifting so it's hard to identify which is which. It could be your camera, or your lens, or maybe your eyes, or your brain, or even the engineers whose job it is to write an algorithm to convert those colours data and put them into a JPEG. It's really hard to say.
