Canon 50mm f1.4 's Signature Dreamy Look

Dreaming in 50mm 1

Ashley and I crawled under a bush among the bugs and the spiders and took that picture (unretouched) with a Canon 50mm f1.4.

I am not quite sure what it is... I heard that it was a strong halation, some form of chromatic abberations, or according to dpreview it's due to a "high levels of blue channel 'colour blur' ". The classic Canon 50mm may not be the sharpest of primes (a grossly relative term compared to pedestrian zooms) but when shot at f1.4 - 1.6, it's got that going and I love it.

This one is a much more flattering angle but it doesn't show the dreamy effect as much as the first.

PS: I am almost positive that the 50mm 1.8 II does not exhibit that effect.

  1. The dreamy effect is interesting, but not being a Canon shooter, I find the lighting more intriguing. Did you use anything as a reflector on the ground to put some more light into the subject's face? Were you wearing white (i.e., being a reflector)? Nice stuff.

  2. John, the ground was littered with yellow leaves. I metered the exposure on the face, the background was left to blow out.

  3. Really nice, IMO. Especially the second - as you say, more flattering angle. Those leaves did well for you.
